NZTC 2014 - My Dark Elf Experience (or lack of)

NZTC 2014 - My experience this year

Playing in my second to last game of the tournament:
This photo nicely  summarises my experience in NZTC 2014.

Up against the strong beasties, hard players, part of a team that valiantly fought, but lacked the overall punch ito list strength when taking on the big boys with tournament honed lists.
All of us lacking tournament experience.

I ran my Dark Witch Elf B*tch bus, (much against my better judgement, but encouraged by Nick (no-one wants to face the witches) Jebson. Took 'em for fun anyway, but probably should have gone w the more competitive Cold One Bus.

So I arrived with Morathi and a Death Hag on the Cauldron, 2 Hydras, 4 Repeater Bolt Throwers, a Lvl 2 on a cold one, 2 units of 11 Xbowmen (Darkshards, as they are now known), 2x 5 shades and Doodfire Warlocks x5. Dark Magic on Lvl 2, and Morthi choosing from the three lores as she is want to do. I retrospect I should have taken breath weapons on the Hydras, but Luc and I  had huge pressure on us to get our lists out, as we only returned from overseas a week or 2 out from the tournament. Also didn't have much time to play test the list either.

So lessons learned:
1. Take a tough, survivable list, grind it out rather than rely on magic and shooting.
2. Don't take a glass cannon (Morathi)
3. Draw your list up in time, play test it, play test it, play test it.
4. Don't listen to Nick.
5. If you take Hydras, take breath weapons on them.
6. The cauldron does not have leadership without the hag, without her it auto fails any leadership tests.

Game 1
Legion of Doom vs Team HAM
Druchii Civil War: Lachie Mulcahy

Almost didn't make it to this one, raced in from Kapiti to find opponent allocated, at table ready to roll.
Took some time to settle down, first game nerves, being late, no photos taken :(

Great game, friendly opponent that clearly knew all the strengths and weaknesses of the Druchii. His cold-ones outclassed my witches, which were expertly diverted. Both Morathis taken out, magic pretty even, poor rolls on winds of magic throughout game for both sides, no spectacular spells got off. Lachie's cold one knights eventually got the upper hand. Looked like it may be a close loss for a while, but then got caught by his master taking out the hag on the cauldron, with a auto leadership fail after that. (Sux, methinks, that statline! )
Witches and cauldron caught and destroyed My Druchii crumbles White-washed 20-0.

Game 2: Team Krak
Neil Williamson's Dwarfs.

One of the most fun games I have ever had against a Dwarf Army with a DE Army. Instead of a gunline with hammers Neil fielded Miners, Longbeards and Warriors, only 4 pieces of artillery, buffed up with the Anvil. Helga came as hero with one unit of Miners, arriving on turn 3. Shooting phases did not go well for him, other than taking out one Hydra. Warlocks and Morathi doing some damage, getting Okrams off twice on his unit of miners, whittling them down until only Helga remained. Valiant Bolt-thrower crews becomg an unlikely tarpit ! The witches charged through into the soft underbelly, and were surprised to see a cannon being dragged into their path as a diversion ! Thinks that's one for the books!

The last hydra gets through to the Anvil, but fails to take out the runelord, resulting in a stalemate

A most entertaining game, which eventually goes to Neil by 13-7 if I recall correctly
Thanks for a fun game, Neil!

Game 3: Team HAM
Thrown to Nick's Daemons!

Drew Nick's Daemons. 2 Skull cannons, bus of Beasts of Nurgle, 2 Units of Horrors and Lvl 4 Tzeench Wizard. This was always going to be painful for me.

Nick deploying his Daemons

The Eye opens, Daemons pouring forth

Bolt Throwers just out of charging distance of those Fiends, got a few shots in before they were annihilated

Thanks to good Ld they did not flee

Managed to kill the unit of Beasts with the Witches, but little else. Took 3 wounds of the Lvl  4 Tzeench /Keeper of Secrets w Xbowmen.  He then chose to go and hide on the furthest corner away. Skull-cannons took out Morathi and the Hydras on turn 2 and 3, and after that it really was game over for the Dark Elves. Can't even remember if I got any points out of this one. Great opponent and a fun game. How I hate those skull cannons.
Good thing Pete's now nerfed them down to 1 per army in FOB-Lite;  if you ask me.

So endeth the First Day. 1/250th the Legion of Doom not doing too well, but enjoying the tournament.

Day 2
Game 1
First up Team Buckethead: Drew Reagan Ridge's Empire.
What a great game and opponent. Had a well-matched battle with the Druchii coming out on top in the end.

Pensive looks as the Witch Elves carve their way through the Empire Knights

Before the massacre

Bolt-throwers picking off the Monstrous Cavalry, as did Doombolt,
a very useful spell from the Warlocks, before they hit the flank of the W.E's
(Here seen doing the Conga on their way to smacking the oversized Chickens.
Are those knights I see showing their heels?

Shrunken Empire heads for Khaine...

A small but sweet victory, one of the most enjoyable games of the tournament:
 game, opponent and enjoyment wise.

Day 2 Game 2
James Millington: WoC

Another hammering coming up for the DE's?
Throgg bus, with serious Lvl 4 Demon prince, Khornish nasties, Hero on Daemonic Mount and dog units, Warshrine to buff up and 3 Skullcrushers to enforce WoC rule

Shooting and magic went well, James avoided the B*tchbus for most. Killed my Hydras early in the piece. WE got into Throgg and Trollbus, nerfed them with burning banner and Morathi added Melkoths, BT poured bolts into them before they got into battle, and then fed them to the witches.
Nasty. I like. Think its the first time I've killed a Trollbus with Throgg driving.

Got into the spirit of the fight when I shouldn't have, and charged the Daemon Prince with Morathi.
Well, that's always me- taking the fight to the enemy. Should have hidden her away, and it may have been a draw. Landed a few blows, but not enough to take him out. Exit Morathi...
A possible draw went to a loss.

A great and most enjoyable game against a humorous and skilled opponent. A really fun game,
and in the end actually quite balanced, thanks to good magic rounds.

Day 3 Game 3
Wolfpack
Jeff Kent's Empire

Up against the team tipped by Pete to finish in the top 5. Can see why, some big guns from the tournament scene here. Professional outfit, friendly but focused and efficient in their gaming.
No quarter given or taken. In my game anyhow. (The way I approach surgery.)
Think the experience was the same for all our team members.

Morathi leading the conga with Lvl 2 in tow.
Mostly to try and stay out of reach of the Hellblaster cannon end Empire Great cannons.

This unfortunately also kept her out of range of the majority of her spells. Hydras negated by murderous cannon fire. Only good moment was my skewering of a rank of Monstrous chickens with my BTs, one of which seemed to have a charmed life. Clever use of terrain, bad luck w fleeing Shades obstructing my WE's movement  and a counter-charge by a very small detachment unit of Xbowmen prevented my WEs and couldron from getting into the action. Out-maneuvred and out-shot.  the game went to Jeff. A lesson in technical playing and knowledge of the rules, delivered with surgical precision.
A good game, but DE's were no match for consistently accurate cannon fire and honed rule skills. Well played game, Jeff.

Some great looking armies from the tournament:

Not sure who this belonged to, but some great lizardmen

NZTC 2014 taken by the Aussies!

New Zealand Warhammer Fantasy Team Championships 2014

taken out by the Aussies

The winners: "Team with the Guy"

The standings

The 2-Day 2014 NZTC wrapped up today. Two teams from our club entered- the hardened veterans (Beauty and the Beasts) and the Newbies (1/250th of the Legion of Doom)

Congrats to " Team with the Guy" , who took out the honours ! Well done guys. Well Done Pete and his Team, a most enjoyable event. It all ran like clockwork (as far as I could see) Thanks for all the hours you must have put in to make this happen!

Moriathi and the Daemon Prince

Many the hard-core tournament players and gamers from NZ (and some from Aus) were there. Lists to make you quake in our boots, any way for the newbies in our team. Some real filthy lists out there. Two days of Warhammer Fantasy hayhem and enjoyment ! As we languished in the bottom ranks I enjoyed this years tournament a little more than last, as there was not as much pressure to perform. I did get thrown under the bus a few times though. Then so dis most of our team. 2 newbies, and the rest of us pretty green, and really just recreational players.

As you can see B and B came in 7th and the Legion of Doom got the wooden spoon. Well done to all the Kapiti Players who took part !

I'm sure Pete will post all the final results, but here is a snapshot of the final score. And yep, that's us...Team 1/250th of The Legion of Doom. Right at the bottom.

My Druchii took their second tournament scalp,an Empire General this time. My 14 year old son Luc, easily the youngest player on the day, also took his first scalp, in his first ever WHFB  tournament. Not bad I'd say...

Well done to Rex and David too, with (comparatively)  under-powered lists they soldiered on regardless...
Great going guys!

Will post more tomorrow...habe lotsa photos! Feel free to use my photos, but please give me credit for my shots :)

NZTC: 1/250th Legion of Doom The Underdogs?

NZTC: 1/250th Legion of Doom: Underdogs ? Or Antiheroes

While I was away in Europe our team for the NZTC became 1/250th of the Legion of Doom

My knee-jerk was that this refers to the DC Comics Team of Anti-Heroes, but just to be safe I googled it, and came up with the following options: (Wikipedia):

Legion of Doom can refer to:

  • Legion of Doom (DC Comics), a group of DC Comics supervillains that appeared in Challenge of the Superfriends - Ok, thats possibly us
  • Legion of Doom (hacking), a hacking group that took its name from the supervillains.. No hacking skills I am aware of
  • The Legion of Doom (mash up group), a mash-up group... No mashing skills that I am aware of either. Music, I presume. We can mash up a Warhammer game though.

  • Legion of Doom (ice hockey), nickname for the line of ice hockey teammates Eric Lindros, John LeClair, and Mikael Renberg ... No skills here, so definitely not us
  • Legion of Doom, the name that the professional wrestling tag team, the Road Warriors, and their manager, Paul Ellering, used while in the WWF/WWE... I never went professional, and only did two years of amateur wrestling back in the 70s. Was no good at that anyhow.

Either way, I strongly suspect we may be the Underdogs in the tournament. We are tournament newbies, shaky on the rules, struggling with even getting our lists right, limited model availability and choice for out armies, we may appear a bit shaky.

Having gone through the lists submitted I also have no hesitation in predicting that we may struggle against the big guns: Throgg Lists, Skull Cannon crossfire, Epidemius and Conga-lines of Beasts of Nurgle, Monstrous Cavalry Buses and Shooty and Magicky lists

Or will we simply be crushed?

So we're going to have to dig deep and hope to find the 1/250th shard of Kryptonite on the day.
We are, however very motivated and ready to rumble!
Bring it on!

Warhammer NZTC 2014 Coming up: Dark Elves Rising to the Challenge

New Zealand Team Competition looming: Dark Elves at the Ready

So with NZTC a week away, the sabres have started rattling, champions and heroes are strutting and posturing. Or is that the generals?
The crowd is not as vociferous as last year, but I suspect more scrutiny of lists and strategic planning is taking place. Last year a lot of matching-up took place on the day.

This year a lot more of the heavyweights of the NZ Warhammer Fantasy Tournament are taking part.
The lists also reflect that. There seems to be a lot less "fun" lists around, with quite a lot of deathstars, filthy lists in abundance. Looks like it will be tough battle.

Kapiti Wargames Club is fielding two teams: Beauty and the Beasts and 1/250 of the Legion of Doom

I am playing in the latter with Rex Foote, David Oemcke and my son Luc. Compared to the other team we are the newbies and comparatively green. We tend to play more for fun than competitively, but that is just the reason we are going! I'm taking the Hydra Bitch Bus and Luc his Ogre Death Star, Dave Dwarfs, and Rex Wood Elfs.

So this is how the field shapes up in terms of armies chosen for the event:

Armies
Beauty & Beasts: Empire Warriors Of Chaos Daemons of Chaos Dark Elves

To the Dark Sphere and Back: Circumnavigating the globe

To the Dark Sphere and back: In NZ again after 30 days circumnavigating the globe

Back to blogging: I am back at the keyboard after 30 days of travelling the world, many great experiences and more additions to the ever growing pile of un-built models.

Luc and I are now working on our lists for the NZTC Warhammer  Tournament (NZ Team Champs) coming up in March. He plans on fielding an Ogre list, and I am working on my Dark Elves (No surprise that, eh, with the great new rules and models)

Our trip took us around the world, from NZ to the land of cheap electronics (Malaysia), beach paradise no 1 (Koh Lipe, Thailand) The land of affordable Warhammer models and Anglophile history (UK), the land of Guiness beer, whiskey in a jar, and folk music (Eire), the land of great cheese, foi gras, garlic and red wine (and things Napoleonic and Francophile history) - France, to Tinseltown (US), and finally to beach paradise no 2 (Moorea, Tahiti) before winging our way back to Aotearoa (NZ)

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to Dark Sphere, London's biggest gaming store, now in Lambeth, London. They recently moved, and are now situated a stone's throw from the Imperial War Museum.

This shop just cannot be missed! We arrived at this gaming cornucopia after a visit to the Natural History Museum. (Trade-off with daughter Lisa, as she didn't want to go to the IWM, and they are renovating for the 100th Anniversary of WW1 anyhow.)

The bulging shelves of the right hand side of Dark Sphere's new home.

The purveyors of joy at Dark Sphere were still unpacking, having just moved into the new premises. Boxes of models were piled up to 3 metres high in places, and it took great discipline to stay within budget.

Needless to say, being free of the mark-up we have to endure in NZ made the experience all the sweeter. We had to unwillingly tear ourselves away, as it was getting late, and as usual when fellow gamers meet, we fell into taking about our hobby with the store staff and fellow afficionados.

Looking forward to the next year of gaming the two of us had to discipline ourselves severely to stick to the agreed budget. We ended up buying a DE cauldron/medusa, warlocks/dark riders, and scourge runner for me,an Ogre fire belly and a unit of ogre bulls, an iron blaster (Yes, Luc felt he needed more ogres and another blaster!), and Gor Rok, and a Carnosaur /Troglothingy,for his Lizard army and he also spied a board game that retails for $120 here, all  for the grand sum of 150 pounds ($300) Would have been even cheaper had we ordered it online beforehand, and collected from thye store!

I had to refrain from getting more Chaos Daemons and Empire stuff, as we still had 2 weeks of travel expenses ahead of us, and I resolutely looked past the racks and racks of Warmachine and other 28mm Privateer Press, and almost any other model maker and scale you could imagine. Ok, I looked. Just a little.

Yes, Battlefront was also there, but with price equity in NZ$ (Funny that). Only Plastic Soldier Co was absent from the racks, and some of the more obscure brands, such as Wargods of Hyperborea (Crocodile games, which I had hoped to find there)

I have just calculated the cost of our GW haul if we had bought it here - $563NZ! (Not counting the $120+ board game, which would have brought the cost to $680+ had we bought these here)  We are talking almost a 100% mark-up. Surely this cannot be justified on transport costs alone.

Anyhow, we got the expected scolding from mommy dearest when we arrived back at our accommodation with 4 bags bulging with models and games. We swiftly de-boxed the models and posted them back to NZ for the princely cost of 15 Euros when we got to Dublin. (26-28 NZ$).

Lots of building and painting to be done now!

Be'Lakor the Dark Master: Rules 40K and WHFB

Statline and Rules for Belakor, Special Character "Slate/Scroll" from GW

Verbatim from "The Artifcer"

Be'Lakor, The Dark Master Dataslate/Battlescroll

screenshot 1

The Dark Master is back.  That's right, the first daemon prince has his own rules again.  But unlike before, where he only had rules in Warhammer, he now also has rules in the far future.  For simplicity's sake, the first half of the post will be about his 40k rules, and the second half about his fantasy battles rules. So, without further ado:

40K:
Okay, for starters, The Dark Master has a seriously nasty sat line:
Weapon Skill 9
Ballistic Skill 5
Strength 6
Toughness 5
4 Wounds
Initiative 8
5 Attacks (6 on the charge)
Leadership 10
4+ Invulnerable Save
Special Rules
Daemon
Eternal Warrior
Fearless (what's you expect, he's almost a greater daemon)
Psyker (Mastery level 3)
Flying Monstrous Creature
Shadow Form: Be'Lakor has a 4+ invulnerable save and the shrouded special rule (+2 to cover)

Lord of Torment: Be'Lakor recieves D3 additional warp charge points if an enemy unit failed a morale check in the previous turn.

Psyker: Be'lakor knows all the spells from the telepathy discipline.

To add to this, Be-Lakor's warlord trait causes a -1 leadership penalty to all enemy units as long as he is alive.

Hellforged Artifact: The Blade of Shadows: Be'Lakor's sword has a strength of user +1 and an AP of 2.  In addition, it has the armor bane (strength+2d6 for penetration), fleshbane (wounds on a 2), Master-crafted (re-roll one failed to hit roll), and specialist weapon (no benefit for additional close combat weapon.

And you can get all this in a Chaos Daemons or Chaos Space Marines list for 350 points.

Now, on to the fantasy battles version.

Be'Lakor has pretty much the same stats in Fantasy as he has in 40k, with the exception that he has an 8 inch movement and that 4+ save is a ward save.

Special Rules:

Terror
Unbreakable
Fly
Loremaster (Lore of Shadow)
Shadow Form: similar to before, Be'Lakor has a 4+ ward save and a -2 to hit modifier.

The Dark Master: enemy units within 12 inches of Be'Lakor get a -1 penalty to their leadership.

Lord of Torment: similar with the 40k version, Be'Lakor gets D3 additional power dice if an enemy unit failed it's morale test in the previous phase.

Magic: Be'Lakor is a level 4 wizard.

Blade of Shadows:  This time, the blade of shadows is a magic weapon that ignore all armor saves.

So, there you have it. Even when you consider how much the rules have changed from his previous incarnation, he still can be said to have gotten a lot nastier

Be'lakor is Back!

Be'lakor is back!

GW releases an update for one of my favourite Characters, both for 40K and WHFB:
A Black Librarty Battlescroll

" Legends tell of how Be'lakor was the first Daemon Prince created by the Chaos Gods, ruling over empires and tribes across the Old World since time immemorial. A master of manipulation and deception, the Daemon has been behind the fall of kings and deaths of countless champions, few experiencing his jealously as sharply as those that would usurp his place as favoured servant of the gods. Many a lord of the Dark Gods has been undone by putting their trust in the Daemon, realising only too late that Be'lakor’s dark designs serve only his own mysterious purpose.

This Battlescroll details the long history and evil desires of the Daemon Prince Be'lakor, as well as the full rules for using him in your games of Warhammer."

Not clear if his statline has changed, or how to field him.

Better dust him off...
