Kapiti Wargames Club to have open day after recent collaboration with Sir Peter Jackson

Table-top strategy games with miniature models have led to a number of Kapiti wargamers and modellers working with Sir Peter Jackson and the Weta Workshop on his World War 1 Battle of Chunuk Bair diorama project. The club has enjoyed local and international media exposure following their involvement with Sir Peter’s Gallipoli project. They offer the public the opportunity to come see for themselves how it is done:

The Kapiti Wargames Club (KWC) have their annual Open Day on Sunday 7 June from 10 am at the Paraparaumu Community Centre (Ngahina Street, Paraparaumu). This annual event (open to the public) showcases the modelling and painting talents of local figure painters and wargamers. The event offers the public an opportunity to try their hand at table-top strategy games.

Demonstration and display games this year will include a Maori Pa Battle Display, World War 2 Eastern Front (Attack on Germany) Tank Battles, Fantasy and Futuristic Science Fiction battle displays.

There will also be a display on the club’s involvement with the WW1 diorama at the Great War Exhibition.

The range of games played include those based on historical fact, fictionalised fact, fantasy and futuristic games. Popular genres currently include Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Flames of War, Lord of the Rings, Warmachine, Firestorm Armada and Star Wars X-Wing. Many other genres feature from time to time. The club also offers strategy based board gaming and card-based strategy games, such as Magic, The Gathering.

The KWC is a youth friendly environment, with supervised introductory gaming activities for younger players from 4pm; and a session for more mature or experienced players from 7pm. Players of all grades, new and experienced alike are welcome to come try their hand.

The Open Day will run from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 7 June 2015. Entry is free.

D-Day at Kapiti Wargames Club Open Day.

KWC had its 3rd open day on Saturday 10 May 2014. Reasonable attendance, but a bit down on previous years. Good gaming though, with great games of WH Monster mash, 40K, WHFB, D-Day Landings FoW (20mm), Ronin (Samurai warfare) and Warmachine going down.

KWCs 2nd Swap day a resounding success (again)

Just a quick word of thanks to all that participated in the 2nd Kapiti Wargames Swap Day. It was a resounding success, with bargains and swaps for all to be had. Everyone walked away satisfied on the day. A big thanks the everyone involved, visitors and members alike.

Personally I found around 30+ brand new and pre-loved fantasy figures, 4 Fenresian wolves, 2 bags of Mantic Basilian Horses, useful tree bits for 20 mm WW2 terrain and bases, lots of paint (Thanks Pukeko games: Vallejo and Reaper) and some bits to make the Dark Elf Raider Ark I have been contemplating at the back of my mind for some time. 

An alternative Demon prince (Do I really need another? ..but the model was soooo cool. And it was a bargain) and small dragon I intend to use as an alternative to the Dark Elf Pegasus.

 I sold the last of my 40K hoard (At last...yay!); some excess German WW2 1/72  tank kits, reference books and codexes, board games, a role playing LOTR game, and a lot of other bits and bobs. A great day of cameraderie and banter, haggling and gamer fun!

Been a bit quiet on the Warhammer front for a while, been working at my 20mm Flames of War Armies, with the Kapiti Wargames Open Day coming up on Sun 30 June. 

Doing a demo game of FoW in this scale (1/72) Touching up my armies and armour; and basing them for FoW (Bases scaled up from 15mm to 20mm equivalent)

My son Luc and I intend to play a post D-Day game; Brits against Falschirmjaeger, with Divisional Panzer and Artillery support. Been working on my Russian army too, as we have an Armourgeddon Armour Clash (read Total War) to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the largest tank battle ever, the Battle of Kursk.

Not that Warhammer is ever far from my mind. Been following the blogs and posts, keen to see what happens with Lizardmen and Dwarfs in future. A little miffed with all the monstrous cavalry and flyers, death stat units that now seem to dominate the game. Call it Fantasy Fatigue.I really enjoy strategy more than deathstar clashes,

The club is running a Tamourkan event at the moment. I find it difficult to commit to campaign type games, much as I love them due to the nature of my work, so have not entered.

  Call for Help from FoWers

The Kapiti Wargames Club will be having an Open Day on Saturday 30 June 2013.

We hope to promote Wargaming regionally as a hobby and pastime as a whole, not just our club.

The event will be our second, with our first visit attracting well over a 100 visitors last year. 

(Infant steps yet) We plan to feature Warhammer Fantasy and 40K games, Flames of War in 20mm, Napoleonics/7-year war, and Starwars X-Wing games, and more

BUT we have run into a bit of difficulty finding members who are able to do a FoW Demo game in 15mm.

The date seems to clash with the FoW tournament schedule. :(

This is an appeal to regional FoW players not involved in the tournament. Would any of you be interested in doing a demo game on the day ? Any other period or scale is  of course also welcome. Just drop me a comment and we can discuss details.

Nurgle Soulgrinder conversion

While everyone was away at Natcon, and doing very well, thank you very much...

I see Sam Campbell took out 3rd place (not bad after a decade or more's hiatus, and just NZTC under his belt) and Hamish also up there in the top 10; and just outside the top 5. Congrats Kapiti Wargames Club Members !
Great going Nick and Fern too, taking Orcs and Goblins up against the big cannons! Well done to Sam Whitt for winning. Druchii rule supreme!

Wish I could have been there! But some of us had to work...
Anyhow, got a few hours' work of converting and painting in.

Decided to finish a conversion of a 40K Chaos Defiler into a fantasy Soulgrinder I had started when the rule addendums and new models came out last year. I was planning to make it a Khorne Soulgrinder.
(Could go with the food theme again here, and call it a Khorne Grinder, but I will restrain.)

I have decided to finally get rid of all my 40K models, as 40K has never really grown on me.
Bang, bang, bang, and little strategy...just who has the biggest and most guns.

It's just like playing against Dwarfs all the time.  Anyhow, my Blood Angels have mostly gone, some SM Landraiders, CSM Nurgle Army etc still looking for a home.

With Nurgle showing to be ascendent in the game, I  decided to rather turn the model to the green side.

It had orginaly been painted as Chaos United SM (sounds like a football team, doesn't it?)
It had a definite  leaning to Khorne, in black, red and gold. But as you can see, no more!

One or two scoops of plague for you?

Prepare to receive the blessings of Father Nurgle!

So I ripped the right arm and cannons off, replaced it with a Plague Flail fashioned from a river troll hand and a scratch-built nurgle arm. I based this around the hind leg of a giant skeletal horse I once bought for $5, thinking it would eventually come in handy. So yesterday was the day it did. Really got stuck into my bitz box...

Banishing thoughts of Natcon from my mind; I got stuck in with Knead-it (as it would just have taken too much greenstuff - read $$) and created an insect-like abdomen.

Inspiration was from the shapes of the plague-drones I was painting in parallel.
Only problem with Knead-it is that you have to work bloody fast and accurately, as it sets very quickly (and rock-hard). Ork-hide shade basecoat (Yes, my paint station is still brimming with old GW paints) and away we go...

Those that are about to be rocked, we salute you! Splat! Here comes more! Splat!
