Age of Sigmar Leaks, Mantic lodges intellectual property suit

First Leaked Age of Sigmar (AoS) Pics: Pandora Opens the Box to see Inside....

Ok, so the first pics of Aos are setting the Interweb thingy alight. Someone snuck a few snaps from the next White Dwarf:

My impressions and thoughts:
  1. Round and oval bases as rumoured...
  2. Space Marines !
  3. In fact, rehashed Blood Angels !
  4. Warhammer Age of Reckoning  level 40 KOTBS (Knight of the Blazing Sun)
  5. Mantic Eloim...hmm intellectual property stoush coming?
  6. Warmachine
  7. Retro-looking logo

Tying in model aesthetic with the fluff and rumours? The coming of Sigmar after the End Times? Clearly not predating the (now defunct) Warhammer World as we knew it.

Mounted hero on monstrous mount/warbeast (tic)
Probable combined statline (tic?) No musicians and standard bearers (tic)
Heavy armoured Roman looking  foot soldiers x 10 (tic) Roman looking shields (tic) Female champion (no tic)
Looks like we still have BSB. Probably combined w magic caster/sigmar blessings
3 x Heavy hitters/Elites and 3 Fast Cav/Flyer types. 40 K here we come...

The rumour of more ancient looking and primitive force - dispelled with irresistable force. (MEGA un-tic here ) but a special award for the person who penned that particular rumour !

Of the lot I really only realy like the cat on the Cat. Ties in with demigrifs and griffons (Are those models likely to survive then? ) At this point, anyhow, with pretty poor quality pics I still reserve my judgement. The SM aesthetic does not work for me. Sorry. 40 K never was my game.

Then to Chaos: So Chaos seems to remain Chaos. Maybe not as be know it.
(Ho-hum?) CSM look. Aesthetic pretty much unchanged.
  1. Bigger, meaner WoC and Marauders - Rumour accurate there. (tic)
  2. No Bloodthirster, (un-tic) but a similar looking Temple Dog/Maulerfiend thing on a LOTR sized Monster base
  3. Abaddon and his mean puppy (?) on large base,
  4. 2 x 10 Units of Marauder types (tic rumour) with Muscians and Standard bearers
  5. again a BSB/Caster/Psyker rolled into one (?)
  6. 5 Elites (Chosen types? - tic  ) and
  7.  another ? Character on foot, or could it be a handler for the monster ?

Mantic must be pleased about all of this

Shouldn't have sold those Blood Angels!

Maggoth Lords Statlines

Stat Lines for Maggoth Lords:

Archibald_TK from Warseer has the following information to add:
Combined statine again,

M6 WS8 BS3 S6 T5 W9 I7 A8 L9

- The character with the two axes is the leader, his axes give him +2S and poisoned attacks. If I remember correctly they all have S6 T5 as base stats, plus a load of W and A. See how ugly his face is?
- The wizard has a cloud of flies that attack units like a shooting attack and count as magical. Also he carries an item that give him +1 to something and -1 to the same thing to all enemy wizards within 12" so I suppose it's to casting checks or whatever wizards do in WFB. He's the one with the stone thrower attack. I'm also pretty sure he's the only one without a 6+ ward save.

- Morbidex Twiceborn is the one I was talking with the regen aura for Nurglings.

WIP Progress reports

Dark Barque and Matincore, Dragonet comin' along....

OK, I have been pretty lax with the progress reports. Been doing a lot of basing and building on my Dark Elf Army, when I was getting ready for NZTC. D-day preparations have taken over big-time though, (Kapiti Wargames Club having an open day 10 May 2014, and I'm refighting the Sword Beach landings) and I'm furiously working on my 20mm WW2 armies and terrain at the moment. Got side-tracked to post on WW1 though, and SA's experience at Delville Wood, effectively SA's Gallipoli.

Alternative Sisters of Slaughter are now done, converted from Dark Eldar Wyches. I'm happy with the end result. Got a few compliments at NZTC.

Did not going to run them at NZTC though. Ran the B*tch bus with two Hydras. Didn't have enough points to give them breath weapons, which, in retrospect was a mistake. Using that on trolls to negate regen or empire mounts could have been useful.

Either way, the Matincore is progressing pretty well, but I need to find a Beastmaster or Dreadlord to ride the beastie. Same for the Dragonet. Using a standard sorceress for Morathi as an alternate Pegasus. The look of the army is coming together nicely now...

Nice action shot of my Morathi bravely (or foolishly) taking on a Daemon Prince

2 x Sea-blue Hydras, Matincore and Morathi on a Dragonet, Black Dragon now also highlighted w sea-blue (hawk turquoise, or whatever it is called now days, tints/shades) Warlocks coming along nicely with washes in same livery. They did do some damage at NZTC. Poisoned attacks and that nasty Doombolt spell.

Also steadily and slowly working on the Empire, with my Parrot riders now nearing completion. I have no idea why these models seem to be such an effort to work on. Liked John Murrie's Demigriff paint job for his mate Reagan. Went up against them at NZTC.

The Forgeworld Demigryffs were such a pleasure! I have to admit that I keen getting side-tracked by Dark Elves and Daemons and WoC.

So now I have on my workbench: Scourgerunner, and the new Cauldron/Medusa kit. Liking the latter a lot. Will keep my old Altar and cauldron, and likely build this one as Medusa or possibly try and magnetise to make an interchangable multi-use model. Have also considered Altering the Dark Barque to accept the Medusa...

And then GW brings out a Dwarf book...

NZTC 2014 - My Dark Elf Experience (or lack of)

NZTC 2014 - My experience this year

Playing in my second to last game of the tournament:
This photo nicely  summarises my experience in NZTC 2014.

Up against the strong beasties, hard players, part of a team that valiantly fought, but lacked the overall punch ito list strength when taking on the big boys with tournament honed lists.
All of us lacking tournament experience.

I ran my Dark Witch Elf B*tch bus, (much against my better judgement, but encouraged by Nick (no-one wants to face the witches) Jebson. Took 'em for fun anyway, but probably should have gone w the more competitive Cold One Bus.

So I arrived with Morathi and a Death Hag on the Cauldron, 2 Hydras, 4 Repeater Bolt Throwers, a Lvl 2 on a cold one, 2 units of 11 Xbowmen (Darkshards, as they are now known), 2x 5 shades and Doodfire Warlocks x5. Dark Magic on Lvl 2, and Morthi choosing from the three lores as she is want to do. I retrospect I should have taken breath weapons on the Hydras, but Luc and I  had huge pressure on us to get our lists out, as we only returned from overseas a week or 2 out from the tournament. Also didn't have much time to play test the list either.

So lessons learned:
1. Take a tough, survivable list, grind it out rather than rely on magic and shooting.
2. Don't take a glass cannon (Morathi)
3. Draw your list up in time, play test it, play test it, play test it.
4. Don't listen to Nick.
5. If you take Hydras, take breath weapons on them.
6. The cauldron does not have leadership without the hag, without her it auto fails any leadership tests.

Game 1
Legion of Doom vs Team HAM
Druchii Civil War: Lachie Mulcahy

Almost didn't make it to this one, raced in from Kapiti to find opponent allocated, at table ready to roll.
Took some time to settle down, first game nerves, being late, no photos taken :(

Great game, friendly opponent that clearly knew all the strengths and weaknesses of the Druchii. His cold-ones outclassed my witches, which were expertly diverted. Both Morathis taken out, magic pretty even, poor rolls on winds of magic throughout game for both sides, no spectacular spells got off. Lachie's cold one knights eventually got the upper hand. Looked like it may be a close loss for a while, but then got caught by his master taking out the hag on the cauldron, with a auto leadership fail after that. (Sux, methinks, that statline! )
Witches and cauldron caught and destroyed My Druchii crumbles White-washed 20-0.

Game 2: Team Krak
Neil Williamson's Dwarfs.

One of the most fun games I have ever had against a Dwarf Army with a DE Army. Instead of a gunline with hammers Neil fielded Miners, Longbeards and Warriors, only 4 pieces of artillery, buffed up with the Anvil. Helga came as hero with one unit of Miners, arriving on turn 3. Shooting phases did not go well for him, other than taking out one Hydra. Warlocks and Morathi doing some damage, getting Okrams off twice on his unit of miners, whittling them down until only Helga remained. Valiant Bolt-thrower crews becomg an unlikely tarpit ! The witches charged through into the soft underbelly, and were surprised to see a cannon being dragged into their path as a diversion ! Thinks that's one for the books!

The last hydra gets through to the Anvil, but fails to take out the runelord, resulting in a stalemate

A most entertaining game, which eventually goes to Neil by 13-7 if I recall correctly
Thanks for a fun game, Neil!

Game 3: Team HAM
Thrown to Nick's Daemons!

Drew Nick's Daemons. 2 Skull cannons, bus of Beasts of Nurgle, 2 Units of Horrors and Lvl 4 Tzeench Wizard. This was always going to be painful for me.

Nick deploying his Daemons

The Eye opens, Daemons pouring forth

Bolt Throwers just out of charging distance of those Fiends, got a few shots in before they were annihilated

Thanks to good Ld they did not flee

Managed to kill the unit of Beasts with the Witches, but little else. Took 3 wounds of the Lvl  4 Tzeench /Keeper of Secrets w Xbowmen.  He then chose to go and hide on the furthest corner away. Skull-cannons took out Morathi and the Hydras on turn 2 and 3, and after that it really was game over for the Dark Elves. Can't even remember if I got any points out of this one. Great opponent and a fun game. How I hate those skull cannons.
Good thing Pete's now nerfed them down to 1 per army in FOB-Lite;  if you ask me.

So endeth the First Day. 1/250th the Legion of Doom not doing too well, but enjoying the tournament.

Day 2
Game 1
First up Team Buckethead: Drew Reagan Ridge's Empire.
What a great game and opponent. Had a well-matched battle with the Druchii coming out on top in the end.

Pensive looks as the Witch Elves carve their way through the Empire Knights

Before the massacre

Bolt-throwers picking off the Monstrous Cavalry, as did Doombolt,
a very useful spell from the Warlocks, before they hit the flank of the W.E's
(Here seen doing the Conga on their way to smacking the oversized Chickens.
Are those knights I see showing their heels?

Shrunken Empire heads for Khaine...

A small but sweet victory, one of the most enjoyable games of the tournament:
 game, opponent and enjoyment wise.

Day 2 Game 2
James Millington: WoC

Another hammering coming up for the DE's?
Throgg bus, with serious Lvl 4 Demon prince, Khornish nasties, Hero on Daemonic Mount and dog units, Warshrine to buff up and 3 Skullcrushers to enforce WoC rule

Shooting and magic went well, James avoided the B*tchbus for most. Killed my Hydras early in the piece. WE got into Throgg and Trollbus, nerfed them with burning banner and Morathi added Melkoths, BT poured bolts into them before they got into battle, and then fed them to the witches.
Nasty. I like. Think its the first time I've killed a Trollbus with Throgg driving.

Got into the spirit of the fight when I shouldn't have, and charged the Daemon Prince with Morathi.
Well, that's always me- taking the fight to the enemy. Should have hidden her away, and it may have been a draw. Landed a few blows, but not enough to take him out. Exit Morathi...
A possible draw went to a loss.

A great and most enjoyable game against a humorous and skilled opponent. A really fun game,
and in the end actually quite balanced, thanks to good magic rounds.

Day 3 Game 3
Wolfpack
Jeff Kent's Empire

Up against the team tipped by Pete to finish in the top 5. Can see why, some big guns from the tournament scene here. Professional outfit, friendly but focused and efficient in their gaming.
No quarter given or taken. In my game anyhow. (The way I approach surgery.)
Think the experience was the same for all our team members.

Morathi leading the conga with Lvl 2 in tow.
Mostly to try and stay out of reach of the Hellblaster cannon end Empire Great cannons.

This unfortunately also kept her out of range of the majority of her spells. Hydras negated by murderous cannon fire. Only good moment was my skewering of a rank of Monstrous chickens with my BTs, one of which seemed to have a charmed life. Clever use of terrain, bad luck w fleeing Shades obstructing my WE's movement  and a counter-charge by a very small detachment unit of Xbowmen prevented my WEs and couldron from getting into the action. Out-maneuvred and out-shot.  the game went to Jeff. A lesson in technical playing and knowledge of the rules, delivered with surgical precision.
A good game, but DE's were no match for consistently accurate cannon fire and honed rule skills. Well played game, Jeff.

Some great looking armies from the tournament:

Not sure who this belonged to, but some great lizardmen

NZTC: 1/250th Legion of Doom The Underdogs?

NZTC: 1/250th Legion of Doom: Underdogs ? Or Antiheroes

While I was away in Europe our team for the NZTC became 1/250th of the Legion of Doom

My knee-jerk was that this refers to the DC Comics Team of Anti-Heroes, but just to be safe I googled it, and came up with the following options: (Wikipedia):

Legion of Doom can refer to:

  • Legion of Doom (DC Comics), a group of DC Comics supervillains that appeared in Challenge of the Superfriends - Ok, thats possibly us
  • Legion of Doom (hacking), a hacking group that took its name from the supervillains.. No hacking skills I am aware of
  • The Legion of Doom (mash up group), a mash-up group... No mashing skills that I am aware of either. Music, I presume. We can mash up a Warhammer game though.

  • Legion of Doom (ice hockey), nickname for the line of ice hockey teammates Eric Lindros, John LeClair, and Mikael Renberg ... No skills here, so definitely not us
  • Legion of Doom, the name that the professional wrestling tag team, the Road Warriors, and their manager, Paul Ellering, used while in the WWF/WWE... I never went professional, and only did two years of amateur wrestling back in the 70s. Was no good at that anyhow.

Either way, I strongly suspect we may be the Underdogs in the tournament. We are tournament newbies, shaky on the rules, struggling with even getting our lists right, limited model availability and choice for out armies, we may appear a bit shaky.

Having gone through the lists submitted I also have no hesitation in predicting that we may struggle against the big guns: Throgg Lists, Skull Cannon crossfire, Epidemius and Conga-lines of Beasts of Nurgle, Monstrous Cavalry Buses and Shooty and Magicky lists

Or will we simply be crushed?

So we're going to have to dig deep and hope to find the 1/250th shard of Kryptonite on the day.
We are, however very motivated and ready to rumble!
Bring it on!

Dark Elf Rules Leak

The Original Carybdis
Dark Elves Rules "Leak" Info from the latest White Dwarf magazine, via Kiwihammer and Jossy:

New Releases

  • Matt Ward authored the new book
  • Largest dual kit is the Cauldron of Blood /Bloodwrack Medusa. You can also use this kit to make the special character Crone Hellebron.(Think I'll be getting this)
  • The next dual kit is Witch Elves and the Sisters of Slaughter – Sisters of Slaughter are apparently the lost daughters of fallen noble houses and look great. (Will keep my old WEs, definitely make the SoS)
  • The new DE Core box allows you to make your warriors with Spears, Swords and Shields or Repeater Cross-bows. (Bleh, don't-a'lika tha newa look)
  • The Dual Hydra/Kharibdyss kit looks pretty good, there are pictures of the Hydra with different paint schemes that actually look a lot better than the leaked photo we’ve already seen. (Will do Kharibdyss - have 2 Hydras in my Army already. Maybe they'll look less cartoony with their lips painted differently)
  • The Special Character Shadowblade  is a single pose figure that will come in a clampack (Probably won't get - have several assassin-type figures from various brands)
  • There is a Lore of Dark Magic Card set being released. (No surprises here, but the content)
  • Army Special Rules/Points Cost
  • Dark Elves now have the army-wide special rule of ASF (unsure if this will apply to monsters/cold ones. Should have had this all along. Elves, are n't they?)
  • Dark Elves also have Hatred but presumably only in the first round (What about the eternal hatred HE rule ?)
  • Black Guard have eternal hatred (Yay! - all races, I presume. DE Elites needed some sort of buff to remain competitive. What about Executioners? )
  • New Rule called murderous prowess allows Dark Elves to re-roll 1′s to wound. Unsure if this will extend to shooting and magic.(DEs will need something in the world of Monstrous cavalry, as it seems they're not getting any)
  • There is a new Beastmaster Lord Level Character which costs 300 points when naked on a Manticore (Good to see Beastmaster characters back, been missing their caste of DEs from the prev Ed)
  • Witch Elves are core and 11 points per model. They can also take magical banners.
  • A unit of 40 Spear Elves and of 30 Xbow Elves with Full command costs 390 points. Unsure what options were used but that means the warriors were 12 points per model. If you do the maths on this it means that Spears are 9ppm and Crossbows are 12.
  • A DE Sorceress Hero looks to be 80 points
  • Cauldrons of Blood still come out of Hero slots and look to have increased in points. They can join units (That's new and useful ! All units or just Khiainite units? Limits on numbers of cauldrons ? More than 1 per army? ) and one of their powers allows a unit to re-roll to wound. (ASF, Hatred and reroll wounds, stacking - Ouch! Bring on the pain!) In the Batrep a unit with a Cauldron and this buff up deletes a unit of Sobunz.
  • Bloodwrack Medusas are rare and have a shooting attack called Bloodwrack Stare. Not sure what it does
  • Hydras can now regain wounds in a manner similar to the Slann with the regen power of the old ones. They are now 180 points, have monster+handler but have to buy their breath weapon. (Can live with that)
  • Lore of Dark Magic – The attribute is called spiteful conjuration and does extra wounds to enemies that have spells cast on them. Unsure of how the mechanic works but could be similar to Tz lore attribute? (Time will tell about the rest of the magic)
  • Lore of Dark Magic – Only spell mentioned is called Word of Pain and it reduces WS/BS/I
  • A Dreadlord with Heavy Armour and a Shield on a Black Dragon costs 449 points.
  • Cold Ones are 30 points and have 2 Attacks, unsure if the cold ones themselves have ASF (They needed to be improved. Suppose they still suffer from stupidlty. Unlikely mounts and monsters will get ASF IMO)

White Dwarf Lizardmen Pics

Here they are, the first Lizardman Pics:
Blurry, but the 1st idea of what's coming. Dusting off my Lizardmen in anticipation!

Ripperdactyls, ridden, not vargeist-like monstrous units. Looking a bit more dynamic in this sculps

Gor-Rok, the great white warrior. New batallion box?

Skink priest, looking a little Orc-like in it's pose ?
Can't make out much on Tetto 'eko

Now this I like! (Lizards really need some artillery/rocklobber type thingy.)
Would be interested to see the stats and info
